INTER/SECTIONS: Shinique Smith showcased a new performance video piece conceived by the artist and commissioned by The Greenway. The epiphany of three performances driven by gestural collage, materials and concepts of her expressive calligraphic paintings and bundled sculptural works, Gesture III: One Great Turning was inspired by the composition of her mural design, astrology, alchemy, mythic love poetry and the energy of The Greenway intersection where the mural once stood.
The performance, featuring local and nationally recognized Kairos Dance Theater, was filmed over the course of 2 days in front of Smith’s 2014/2015 mural, Seven Moon Junction with the use of drone video cameras. This performance video is a manifestation of Smith’s improvisational and collaborative approach to art making which showcases the breadth of her repertoire through her paintings,large-scale installations and performance based works; while grounded in her personal history and life experiences.
The event featured a conversation between Smith and her most important collaborators in art and life – Light, video, sound and phenomena based installation artist, Gary Pennock; Author, executive coach, explorer and former talk radio host of ‘The Mind’s Eye,’ Vkara Phifer-Smith and Writer, curator, assistant professor of the History of Art and Architecture at Brown University, Courtney J. Martin.
